Cabiria Luncheonette & Oyster Bar

Cabiria is the newest addition to the trendy Barracks precinct near Caxton Street. The Barracks is a backpackers meets hipster precinct that has something for everyone from pizza and burgers to ice-cream and steaks to the more upmarket Spanish and Modern Australian cuisines offered by the likes of Peasant and Chelsea Bistro.

Cabiria begins the strip of trendy, upmarket restaurants and is a beacon of warmth in the middle of what could have been a cold and eerie precinct. The bar and open kitchen give the restaurant the warmth and atmosphere that every good restaurant should have. The small but inviting bar is the best part of the restaurant and perfect for pre-date drinks or a catch-up with your friends. The staff are also super friendly and willing to help with anything, including photography tips, as I found out when one of the wait staff, studying photography, helped me out with lens recommendations!

After initially high expectations we decided on our meals. Between the two of us we shared, the Baby Back Pork Ribs with aged balsamic vinegar ($14), the Pizza Rustica with silverbeet, egg, pecorino, olives and smoked mozzarella ($14) and the Braised Beef Cheeks - Red wine braised with baby carrots and nduja traditional ($24). The Baby Back Pork Ribs were tender with a tart sauce which complemented the meat well. I enjoyed the tartness as it offset the richness of the fatty but tender ribs. The Pizza Rustica was more like a pie, like the waiter had warned upon ordering. We found the pizza to be rather bland and it lacked acidity and sweetness which would have helped offset the other flavours. The Braised Beef Cheeks were delicious. They were essentially tender meat ribboned with softened fats and sinews braised in a delicious sauce. Though the meal, as a main, was not satisfying as the two tiny carrots did not provide a sufficient base to the meal. The dish would have been perfect if it had been accompanied by potatoes or another starch base. Overall, we had a pleasurable experience but Cabiria didn't make it to the top of our list!
